vRA 8.1 deployment failure - LCMVRAVACONFIG590003 - Unable to read vRA certificate configuration for 'lb': Missing certificate configuration for lb

VMware Community - Št, 04/23/2020 - 14:59

If you get this error there is a chance that you use IPs in the Subnet 172.16/12 ( - in your Network. In our Case the vRA Appliance has a 172.17.16.x address. The vCO docker image has a unused docker0 interface with the IP so it breaks routing and the container can not reach anything between - Workaround is to remove the interface from the image:

Connect to the vRA Appliance with ssh and run:

cat << EOF > Dockerfile

FROM vco-polyglot-runner_private:latest

RUN mkdir -p /etc/docker

RUN printf '{\n "iptables": false,\n "bridge": "none"\n}\n' > /etc/docker/daemon.json

docker build -t vco-polyglot-runner_private:latest .

After that you can hit "Retry" button in vRLCM and the deployment should finish. The same issue is in the vRO Standalone Appliance and to apply the workaround run:

/opt/scripts/deploy.sh --onlyClean

cat << EOF > Dockerfile

FROM vco-polyglot-runner_private:latest

RUN mkdir -p /etc/docker

RUN printf '{\n "iptables": false,\n "bridge": "none"\n}\n' > /etc/docker/daemon.json

docker build -t vco-polyglot-runner_private:latest .

A official KB should be released soon.

@VMware GSS: Thanks for the fix

Detected an invalid snapshot configuration....

VMware Community - Št, 04/23/2020 - 13:24

Hello all.

I have Googled the issue, but was unable to solve it with the suggestions.

A bit of info:

I have 2 VMware ESXi version 6.0.0 build 3620759

Between the 2 hosts i have a replication (Veeam), and during a replica, the server ran out of space.

I freed up som space, and got things working.

Afterwards my Veeam replics and backup of VM's on that server started failing.

I removed the VMware snapshots of the running hosts, and ran a consolidation.

Trying to make a snapshot, i get the error:

"Detected an invalid snapshot configuration"

Afterwards i tried, among theese things:
- Reboot a VM.

- Shutdown and start a VM.

- Shutdown and moving the vmsd file to a new location.

- Snapshot, same error.

- Consolidating the VM, same error.

- With the VM running, moving te vmsd file to a new location and make a new snapshot. Same error.

The content of the vmsd file is:

.encoding = "UTF-8"

snapshot.lastUID = "1914"

So i found this article on VMware:

VMware Knowledge Base https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1026043

I'm a bit stuck as i cant reboot the server, and im not sure if i need to reboot. But i logged in using SSH, and i found the Vmid.

The reload command dident work.

What i'm seeking, is any other solutions, whare i dont have to reboot.
And it is ESXi version 6, and it doesent seem to have the same tech Support mode.

Or maby a confirmation that i'm on the right path.

Trigger/Force Refresh of ExtensionData.Guest.Net

VMware Community - Št, 04/23/2020 - 12:33

dear all,

I'm trying to implement an automated workaround with PowerCLI for an issue we have with vCenter and a third party plugin.

Basically my question is: Is there a way to force a refresh of the data in $MyVM.ExtensionData.Guest.Net with PowerCLI? Using the web client, it seems that this is triggered by opening the web console of $MyVM.

More details about my question:

vCenter obviously seems to have a glitch that when creating a virtual machine with multiple virtual network adapters, it only displays the IP address of the last network adapter in the Summary tab.

For example, I have a VM with three virtual NICs, and vCenter only displays the IP address of the third NIC.

In PowerCLI, this issue looks like this:

$MyVM = get-vm -Name "MyVM"

Network        : PortGroup1

IpAddress      : {}

MacAddress     : 00:50:56:a8:d3:5a

Connected      : True

DeviceConfigId : 4001

DnsConfig      :

IpConfig       : VMware.Vim.NetIpConfigInfo

NetBIOSConfig  :

Network        : PortGroup2

IpAddress      : {}

MacAddress     : 00:50:56:a8:b5:b0

Connected      : True

DeviceConfigId : 4001

DnsConfig      :

IpConfig       : VMware.Vim.NetIpConfigInfo

NetBIOSConfig  :

Network        : PortGroup3

IpAddress      : {}

MacAddress     : 00:50:56:a8:88:9e

Connected      : True

DeviceConfigId : 4001

DnsConfig      :

IpConfig       : VMware.Vim.NetIpConfigInfo

NetBIOSConfig  :

As you can see, the IpAddress is the same on all vNICs. However, all vNICs are of course configured with a different IP. According to support of the third party plugin, all 6.7.x versions are affected by this glitch.

Workaround (GUI):

The workaround for this issue in the GUI is simply to open the web console of the affected VM...This seems to trigger a refresh of this information, and after that all three IPs are showed correctly both in the GUI as well as in $MyVM.ExtensionData.Guest.Net. However after a few days, the issue returns and we need to open the web console again. Therefore I'm searching a way to work around this by running a powerCLI script regularly.

Thanks in advance for your support!

How to set up a vSAN with new servers?

VMware Community - Št, 04/23/2020 - 08:45

Hi all!

I  have set up a vSAN with 3 nodes. Since one server passed away and I am not interested in fixing it since it is very old now.

I am about to buy 2 new servers with much higher RAM frequency, better CPU, all nVME SSDs etc.

So my question is instead of adding 2 new servers to an old vSAN setup and create bottlenecks, wouldn't it be better to create two "two node vSAN cluster" and transfer my VMs that I want to have greater speed to the new vSAN environment?

Also if something happens I retrieve from a NAS back up to any of two!

What do you think? Each set up would be the observer of the other. I do not know if this idea is possible and if it is the best practice!

Thank you in advance,

vCenter / vSphere home lab design

VMware Community - Ut, 04/21/2020 - 22:09

I have the hardware and all the necessary 'bits', I think in order to start setting up my home lab.  Looking for help / guidance on the best practices and what I 'should' avoid doing in the build.  The plan is for 2 separate ESXi servers, one for production and one for development.  As well as an instance of vCenter that will manage both.

2x HP DL380 G7

2x Cisco 3750G

1x D2600 storage

My initial thoughts is to have vCenter virtualized on the development side, inorder to prevent any impact to the production?  Also, what is a recommended way to start the basic setup so that it can be scaled up for future projects.  Thanks for any help or guidance.

Send NSX-T Load Balancer Access Logs to Syslog

How can I send only NSX-T Load Balancer Access Logs to Syslog? I can't see any Log Message IDs related to LB, so wonder if there is a way to only send messages related to LB. If not, which Log Message ID would include the LB access logs?

VCSA Thick to Thin Provision on VxRail

VMware Community - Ut, 04/21/2020 - 00:11

I have the nagging

"vSAN online health alarm 'Thick-provisioned VMs on vSAN' " and I finally decided to investigate further now that I have time. The VM in question is one of my two VCSA. According to the VCSA summary page it is taking up a whopping 1.73 TB. My first question is, Isn't that really huge for VCSA??

According to  VMware Knowledge Base 66758 there are several options for converting this to thin. Because of the size of it, and because I have never performed this before, I could use some advice on the best option to convert this to thin. I do have two vCenters that are linked, each controls a different VxRail cluster. So I can perform operations on the thick VCSA from the other VCSA.

It appears that the most popular option is to vStoragemotion to another SAN and back. In my case that would mean I would move it from one VxRail cluster to the other, and back. Because of the size I am concerned it would take forever. This VCSA runs our Horizon desktops, and I fear that having it turned off for a long period of time is going to disrupt VM provisoning etc. of our desktop pools.

Any advice on how to handle this is much appreciated!

Unable to configure the network printer when AppStack attached with App Volumes 4.0

VMware Documents - Ne, 04/19/2020 - 23:49

Problem description:

With Appstack 4.0 attached in the remote desktop, if the user tries to configure any network printer it fails with an error

"Windows Cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x00000006"

On the same remote desktop, if the no appstack is attached, user is able to configure the network printer.

VMware AppVolumes 4.0

Note: First implement the action plan on a test pool or test machine before moving it to production.

  • Power on master VM.
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files(x86)\CloudVolumes\Agent\Config.
  • Create a new folder called "Custom"
  • Then create two folders called "app"
  • Create a notepad file, open the file and below lines:

exclude_registry=\REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider

  • Save the file as snapvol.cfg. Make sure file extension is correctly set to '.cfg' not '.cfg.txt'.
  • Reboot the VM, Shutdown the VM and take a snapshot and recompose/publish the pool with this snapshot.
  • Login to the VM and you should be able to map network printers now.

PS: For further details or information please contact VMware App Volumes support team.

Horizon Client - Error: An SSL error occured

VMware Community - Ne, 04/19/2020 - 08:38

I'm getting an SSL error when trying to connect to my work server.

Error: An SSL error occured

routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unsupported protocol

Works on Horizon Client 4.6.1-6748947, but not on newer versions.

Trying to get it work on 5.2.0-14569086 (windows 10 app) or standalone app.

From what I understand, this is due to TLSv1.0 Disablement in newer versions of the client.

Is there a workaround I can use to enable TLSv1.0 on newer client?

It's unlikely my company will upgrade their side anytime soon and I would prefer to use up to date client instead of older version.

Tips and notes about Vmware HA

VMware Documents - So, 04/18/2020 - 08:30

As you know one of the most important component in VMware Vsphere is HA(High Availability).

But if you want to run HA in your Datacenter, before it you must know some tips about HA, how to implement and how to configure it, in this article we wont describe how to implement HA in your cluster or how to add a host step by step, but in this article we want to say something important than "How to implement HA Component!" and you must know it before every change in your activated HA Datacenter.

First tip is about VSAN(Virtual SAN), as you know this is Vmware solution for Shared storage, and its one of an amazing features in Vmware Vsphere , but you must know some tips about it when you want run this service or component in your datacenter with HA , for example if you have a Cluster without VSAN feature, HA transfer its all data by Management Vmkernel NIC and when you enable VSAN in the cluster, HA redirect its own traffic via which vmkernel have VSAN enabled.

Another tips about VSAN and HA is, you can not enable VSAN when HA is Active, you must disable HA then enable VSAN and then re-enable HA.

Next tip is about NIC Configuration when you have VSAN and HA as a active component in your cluster, as before we say about HA traffic transfer method in the clusters with VSAN enable state, you know HA send and receive its traffic via VSAN enable NIC, but once of the important tip about this condition is "you can not edit your NIC setting as a usual " ! you can change anything of your VSAN NIC setting, but its not work properly, cause HA Agent not configured(and its not suited for such situations) to pick up new setting from VSAN NIC you newly configure it. After VSAN enabled in your cluster you must perform this step for any little change in your NIC settings:

1- Disable Host Monitoring for your cluster

2- Mack VSAN Network NIC change

3- Right click on each host in your cluster and select Reconfigure for Vsphere HA

4- Re-Enable Vsphere HA Monitoring

Next tip is about IP v6, if you want use IPv6 in your Datacenter you must know every host in your Cluster must have IPv6, you can not have a cluster with 2 host with IPv6 and 5 Host with IPv4.

Another tip about IPv6 is if you use IPv6 for your HA network, you can not set IPv4 as a Isolation Address.

To upgrade your Datacenter from IPv4 to IPv6 you must before any change in IP Address configuration, set your HA into disable state and after changes, re-enable HA.

PSoD with suspended I/Os on capacity SSD

VMware Community - Pi, 04/17/2020 - 22:06

7-node all-flash vSAN cluster. One host went into PSoD with the following error. All VMs on the host crashed, restarted on another host by HA but we still needed some manual steps to perform to start the databases. Is this behavior by design or misconfiguration? I have FTT2 and FTT3 policies but VMs could crash with a single disk problem?
