VMworld 2015: vCloud Air enhancements

Po, 08/31/2015 - 21:49

Today at the start of VMworld 2015, VMware announced several enhancements to vCloud Air. These updates and others from VMware this week show how the company is looking to become a formidable contender in the cloud infrastructure market. Companies are depending on public clouds to a greater and greater extent and VMware is taking steps to provide the basic components that other cloud providers offer. Cross-Cloud vMotion One of the coolest enhancements is probably cross-cloud vMotion. With the release of vSphere 6 we already saw a lot of vMotion enhancements but now VMware raised the bar even [ … ]

VMworld 2015: VMware released VAIO

Po, 08/31/2015 - 19:09

At VMworld in San Francisco, VMware released vSphere APIs for IO filtering or VAIO (No relation with a certain laptop series). With VAIO, VMware offers a framework  to develop filters that run in ESXi and can intercept any IO requests from a guest operating system to a virtual disk. An IO will not be issued or committed to disk without being processed by IO Filters created by 3rd parties. How does it work IO requests moving between the guest operating system (Initiator), located in the Virtual Machine Monitor(VMM), and a virtual disk (Consumer) are filtered through a series [ … ]

VMworld 2015: VMware launches vSphere Integrated Containers

Po, 08/31/2015 - 18:55

Two months ago VMware introduced Project Bonneville. Today at VMworld 2015, Kit Colbert revealed Bonneville’s core technology which is now powering vSphere Integrated Containers. VMware today announced technology previews for vSphere Integrated Containers and Photon Platform — two new products that companies can use to build and run applications inside of containers. The response to Bonneville from VMware customers has been huge. They absolutely get the value proposition of combining the best of both worlds: The speed, agility and workflow of containers; underpinned by a rock-solid enterprise platform that they already trust. Containers are an increasingly popular technology that [ … ]

VMworld 2015: Virtual SAN 6.1 introduction – vSAN grows up!

Po, 08/31/2015 - 18:15

Today at VMworld the new version of Virtual SAN, version 6.1, was introduced. VMware’sVirtual SAN leverages local storage in servers and delivers it to the vSphere cluster as a virtual SAN. vSAN was introduced in 2014 as version 5.5. The new features are pretty impressive. Initially Virtual SAN required to have at least 1 SSD and 2 SAS or SATA disks per node with a minimum of 3 nodes. With the new version you have more options and better protection. Virtual SAN basically comes in 2 flavors:Virtual SAN Standard andVirtual SAN Advanced. With vSAN standard you have these features: Storage Policy Management Read/Write SSD [ … ]

VMworld 2015: VMware introduces EVO SDDC

Po, 08/31/2015 - 18:10

VMware expanded its software-defined data center strategy with the introduction of its EVO SDDC software stack for managing storage, compute, networking and virtualization resources as a single system. EVO SDDC, previously known as EVO:RACK, can be used by OEMs to build integrated enterprise software-defined data center and cloud solutions that scale from one-third of a server rack to thousands of nodes. EVO SDDC was developed as a way to bring flexibility to data center infrastructures that traditionally have been built on rigid hardware configurations. The goal of EVO SDDC is to dramatically simplify the time and effort it takes to [ … ]

VDI Done Right! with NexentaConnect

Po, 06/15/2015 - 06:00

In this blog post, VDI Done Right! with NexentaConnect, I will dive deeper into VDI as a solution and how you can use NexentaConnect with local storage to achieve a great user experience. The most important part of a VDI project, in my opinion, is the User! I often see that the most fabulous technical environments are being build but without the User being the focus point. If you want your VDI project to succeed think about the users and the experience they will feel. Changing things in the user surroundings will make them uncomfortable at first, so [ … ]

VMware VSAN reusing SSD disks

Pi, 05/29/2015 - 08:26

Ealier this week I’ve been configuring a new VSAN cluster. The old configuration was using hardware that wasn’t complying with the VMware vSAN HCL. We ordered new raid controllers and HDD’s and reused the SSD disks, as those where compliant with the HCL. Adding and configuring the new hardware went well and ESXi was installed without a problem. After doing some network configurations on the hosts it was time to turn on VSAN. And that is where I ran into an issue. The moment I turned on VSAN (manual mode) each host created a disk group containing the SSD’s [ … ]
